BSc Radiology, Diagnostic Imaging and Radiotherapy Techniques (taught in English)

The BSc in Radiology, Diagnostic Imaging and Radiotherapy Techniques is a three-year 180 ECTS credits degree course taught in English. The profession of Medical Radiographer is applied in the following four specific areas:

– Radiodiagnostics

– Nuclear Medicine

– Radiotherapy

– Health Physics

The BSc in Medical Radiology, Imaging and Radiotherapy Techniques is therefore divided into these four areas, plus a cross-sectional area covering general knowledge. The area of radiodiagnostics, which includes various specialisations, is structured according to a programme that is articulated over all three years, as is the cross-sectional area.

1st YEAR The aim of the first year is to provide the basic knowledge of physico-chemistry, anatomo-physiology, pathology, hygiene and health legislation and radiation protection, as well as the principles of the professional discipline, as a prerequisite for the first practical experience, aimed at the acquisition of basic skills and orientation of the student to the professional field of radiodiagnostics.

2nd YEAR The aim is to consolidate knowledge in the field of radiodiagnostics and imaging. Students will also acquire knowledge in the field of nuclear medicine and in-depth study of the applications of diagnostic imaging in clinical specialties. They will also acquire knowledge and skills in quality assurance of diagnostic services, as well as obtain detailed information on image management and processing issues and teleradiology systems. Several internships are planned in settings where the student will be able to test the knowledge, methods and techniques acquired.

3rd YEAR The aim is to acquire and consolidate knowledge of radiotherapy. Students will acquire knowledge aimed at developing specific skills in patient care management and first aid. Basic knowledge of healthcare management, organisation and psychology to enhance the ability to work in teams and in complex organisational contexts. In the third year, there is an increased emphasis on work placements, where students can experience increasing autonomy and responsibility under the supervision of professionals. This is also reflected in the choice of credits allocated to internships, which gradually increase from the first to the third year.

Teaching mode and activities

Formal teaching

This form of teaching includes – Lectures: the discussion of a specific topic, identified by a title, by a lecturer, also with the use of IT and/or multimedia support, on the basis of a pre-established syllabus, given to students regularly enrolled in a given year of the course, also divided into small groups; – Seminars: teaching activities with the same characteristics as lectures, but carried out simultaneously by several lecturers with different skills and registered in the lecture register of each one of them. In the last period of the programme, when non-Italian students have acquired a sufficient command of the language, some lessons may be given in Italian.

Non-formal teaching

This is an interactive teaching activity, addressed to a small group of students and coordinated by a tutor whose task is to facilitate the acquisition of knowledge, skills and behavioural patterns by the students. Learning takes place mainly through the input resulting from the analysis of problems and the elicitation of the methodological skills needed to solve them and make decisions, as well as through the direct and personal performance of gestural and relational actions during practical exercises and/or visits to clinical departments, outpatient’s clinics, community facilities, research laboratories.

      • A) Modules.  Integrated modules are taught by one or more teachers, depending on the specific objectives assigned to the course. The specific objectives of each course module, included in the study programmes, and its timetable are submitted annually by the teachers before the start of enrolment for the new academic year.
      • B) Vocational activities. During the three years of the BSc programme, students are expected to acquire specific professional skills in the field of nursing through work placements in the institutions designated by the Programme Board and during the periods established by the same. The internship may also be carried out in developing countries.
      • C) Electives. The Programme Board offers elective activities, which may take the form of lectures, seminars, interactive courses in small groups, among which the student exercises his/her personal choice, up to a total of 6 ECTS credits. Each student chooses an elective independently of the educational activities offered.
