The signing of the agreement took place at UniCamillus in the presence of Rector Profita and representatives of the Emergency Medicine and Support Center, an operational body of the Libyan Ministry of Health.
UniCamillus’s international engagement is growing. In September, an agreement was signed at the University’s headquarters in Rome with the Emergency Medicine and Support Center (EMSC), the operational body of Libya’s Ministry of Health, for the launch of a CPD second-level course in Traumatology designed to prepare medical and health staff to work in extremely critical situations. In addition UniCamillus’ Rector, Gianni Profita, and representatives of the Libyan institution who signed the agreement, Rome’s Policlinico Di Liegro’s Director of the Department of Surgery, Professor Massimiliano Iannuzzi Mungo, who is also the project coordinator, played a key role in bringing this initiative to life. The scientific director of the course is Professor Giorgio De Toma.
Starting in December 2024, Italian doctors and health professionals will travel to Libya on a monthly basis to give lectures. The tutors are all experts in emergency medicine and traumatology, specialising in surgery, orthopaedics, clinics and anaesthesiology, who will train Libyan doctors on site. In-classroom lectures will also be complemented by a series of online lessons, which will be delivered from the Policlinico Di Liegro.
Last year a meeting was held in Tripoli between a UniCamillus delegation, led by Rector Profita, and the institutions of the North African country. The meeting was mediated by the Italian Embassy in Libya and was attended by Professor Mungo himself. On that occasion, a memorandum of understanding was drawn up for a collaboration that would allow Libyan doctors to specialise in emergency surgery, benefiting from the excellence that Italy can offer in this field. In fact, it was the EMSC that asked for the possibility of setting up a two-year CPD second-level course to study all aspects of traumatology in war or particularly critical contexts, identifying UniCamillus as the most suitable partner to carry out this project. The University’s multicultural vocation, its state-of-the-art degree programmes, its facilities, and organisational structure, already consolidated through years of international experience and collaboration, were the elements that convinced the EMSC to choose UniCamillus to improve the country’s healthcare.
Participants in the CPD course in Traumatology will receive comprehensive and advanced training in the management of all emergencies, both civilian and military. From war scenarios to natural disasters and all types of major accidents, at the end of the course surgeons, nurses and healthcare professionals will be able to deal with all organisational aspects related to the management of traumatised patients, from setting up an intensive care unit to hospitalisation and surgery.
‘A year ago, when we returned from our mission in Libya, we realised that for us this would be much more than an educational and training project for doctors: it would be a real expansion of our academic community at an international level in the Mediterranean, which is particularly close to our hearts,’ said Rector Gianni Profita shortly after signing the agreement with the EMSC. ‘UniCamillus is proud to be able to contribute to improving the health of a people historically connected to us by the shores of the Mediterranean, in accordance with the inspiring principles of its academic activity, which welcomes students from all over the world and turns them into versatile professionals with a particular focus on the human aspect of medicine.’
