180BSc Biomedical Laboratory Techniques (taught in Italian)
The BSc in Biomedical Laboratory Techniques (L/SNT-3 – Class of Technical Health Professions) aims to train healthcare professionals equipped with the competencies set out in the Ministerial Decree of the Ministry of Health dated 26 September 1994, no. 745, as well as in its subsequent amendments and additions. Graduates in Biomedical Laboratory Techniques are healthcare professionals responsible for the correct execution of analytical procedures and for their own professional conduct within laboratory settings. They carry out their duties with technical and professional autonomy, in direct collaboration with graduate laboratory staff assigned to the various operational responsibilities. Graduates in Biomedical Laboratory Techniques may find employment as salaried professionals in public laboratory facilities (such as Hospital Trusts, University Hospitals, Research Institutes, Zooprophylactic Institutes, and others), in private laboratories, or as freelance practitioners.
These objectives and competencies are attained through a three-year programme awarding 180 ECTS credits, with 60 ECTS credits per academic year and a 75% attendance requirement. The programme includes face-to-face lessons, vocational internships, individual study, workshops, and electives. Through the BSc in Biomedical Laboratory Techniques, students will acquire:
- the scientific foundations and the theoretical-practical preparation required to qualify for the profession of Biomedical Laboratory Technician, along with the methodology and cultural awareness necessary for lifelong learning. The programme also fosters a level of professional, decision-making and operational autonomy, developed through both theoretical and practical training, including behavioural competencies acquired within the specific professional context. This ensures that, by the end of the programme, graduates will have full mastery of all required skills and be immediately employable in the workplace;
- the ability to carry out laboratory activities in analysis and research related to biomedical and biotechnological investigations, particularly in clinical biochemistry, microbiology and virology, pharmacotoxicology, immunology, cellular pathology, haematology, cytology and histopathology, transfusion medicine, gender medicine and genomics;
- the ability to monitor and verify the correct functioning of laboratory equipment;
- the ability to correctly perform analytical procedures and take responsibility for their own work, within the scope of their duties and in accordance with established protocols;
- the ability to collaborate with other healthcare professionals in multidisciplinary settings;
- the ability to contribute to the training of support staff and actively participate in continuing education related to their professional profile;
- the ability to contribute to research within the scope of their competencies;
- the ability to apply principles of health economics in professional decision-making, for the benefit of the community.
The programme aims to train graduates with strong theoretical and practical knowledge of innovative methodologies that are increasingly relevant in the medicine of the future, making them more competitive in specific professional fields. Graduates in Biomedical Laboratory Techniques may pursue advanced training pathways, including CPD first-level courses and MSc programmes. Upon completion of the MSc programme, they may also access specialisation schools and PhD programmes, as per official calls for applications.
Types of teaching activities
Formal education
This form of teaching includes: – lectures: a discussion of a specific topic identified by a title. Lectures are delivered by a tutor and may make use of IT and/or multimedia support. They are based on a predefined schedule and are given to students who are regularly enrolled in a specific year of the course. Students are divided into small groups. – seminars: teaching activities that have the same main characteristics as lectures. Seminars are, however, held simultaneously by several lecturers with different areas of expertise. These seminars are recorded in each lecturer’s register of lectures.
The programme is delivered in Italian.
Non-formal education
This interactive teaching activity is aimed at small groups of students and is coordinated by a tutor whose role is to help students acquire knowledge, skills, and behavioural models. Learning takes place mainly through problem analysis and mobilising the necessary methodological skills to solve problems and make decisions, as well as through direct, personal actions (gestural and relational) in practical exercises and/or attendance at clinical departments, clinics, local facilities, and research laboratories.
A) Modules. Course modules are held by one or more lecturers, depending on the specific objectives assigned to the course. The specific objectives of each individual course, which are contained in the examination syllabuses, and their scheduling are proposed annually by the course lecturers before the start date of enrolment for the new academic year.
B) Vocational activities. During the three years of the BSc in Midwifery, students are required to acquire specific professional skills in the field of nursing by carrying out clinical internships at the facilities identified by the Programme Board, and during the periods defined by the same. Internships may also be carried out in developing countries.
C) Elective activities. The Programme Board organises elective teaching activities, which may consist of lectures, seminars, interactive courses in small groups, from which students choose their own options, until a total of 6 ECTS credits have been obtained. Each student independently chooses their elective activities from among those offered.
Language of instruction of the programme: Italian.
Head of School: Professor Daniele Armenia
