UniCamillus’s BSc in Dental Hygiene is a programme qualifying students for the healthcare profession of Dental Hygienist, designed to train highly qualified professionals in the prevention and promotion of oral health.
The degree programme, Class L/SNT3, lasts three academic years, totalling 180 ECTS credits, and is delivered through traditional classroom‑based teaching. The programme is completed with a final qualifying examination, the award of the degree title ‘BSc in Dental Hygiene’, and immediate access to the profession.
The programme includes theoretical and laboratory‑based activities, elective modules, a professional clinical internship, and a final qualifying examination. In accordance with the regulations for this degree class, at least 60 ECTS credits of clinical internship are guaranteed, carried out under the supervision of professional tutors and coordinated by a lecturer holding the highest academic qualification required for the role.
It gives access to first level CPD courses available at UniCamillus or other universities, according to the procedures established in the respective regulations, as well as access to MSc programmes in the LM/SNT3 class.
Graduates in Dental Hygiene may also find employment in public or private healthcare institutions, on an employed or self-employed basis.
The course is delivered in Italian and aims to provide graduates with the cultural background and the conceptual and methodological tools required by healthcare professionals qualified to carry out the technical and care‑related activities set out in the Professional Profile of the Dental Hygienist (Ministerial Decree No. 137 of 15 March 1999) and in the Code of Ethics of the Profession (latest edition approved by the National Council of the FNO TSRM and PSTRP on 31 January 2025).
The degree programme aims to develop healthcare professionals with technical‑scientific, clinical, interpersonal, educational and ethical skills, capable of working with autonomy and professional responsibility, in compliance with Legislative Decree 502/1992 as amended, Law 42/1999 and Law 251/2000.
The ultimate objective of the degree programme is to enable students to acquire solid competences and sufficient practical experience to carry out primary, secondary and tertiary oral‑health prevention activities, addressing the oral‑health needs of both healthy and medically compromised individuals.
The programme extends over three years, with a nationally regulated intake, and comprises lectures, practical sessions, laboratory activities and compulsory professional training internships, starting from the first year.
The curriculum is organised into basic, core, related and supplementary subject areas:
- Basic subjects: providing the knowledge required to understand pathological processes affecting the stomatognathic system in children and adults, including the fundamentals of anatomy, physiology, microbiology, diagnostic imaging and epidemiology.
- Core subjects: providing technical, care‑related and clinical skills for the prevention and maintenance of oral health, including periodontal monitoring, mucosal diseases, diagnosis of hard and soft tissues, preventive treatments, whitening, polishing and dental first aid.
- Related and supplementary subjects: strengthening the clinical training of the Dental Hygienist by developing biomedical knowledge, diagnostic, preventive and communication skills, contributing to a comprehensive and informed professional preparation, also with a view to postgraduate pathways.
Access to the final qualifying exam is granted only upon completion of 4500 hours of theoretical and practical activities. The course is structured into two semesters per academic year, allowing students to obtain 60 ECTS credits. One ECTS credit corresponds to 25 hours of learning.
Attendance is compulsory for all theoretical and practical activities. Furthermore, students can only take Integrated Course exams if they have attended at least 75% of the scheduled hours for the relevant theoretical components.
The acquisition of professional competences is carried out through theoretical and practical training (internship and laboratory), which includes the acquisition of behavioural competences and is carried out in the specific work context, so as to guarantee, at the end of the course, the full mastery of all the necessary competences and their immediate application in the work environment.
Types of teaching and training activities
The BSc Dental Hygiene may make use of one or more of the following types of teaching/training activities:
- Face-to-face lectures: presentation of a specific topic included in the training curriculum of the BSc Dental Hygiene by one or more lecturers, according to a pre-determined timetable, and delivered in a classroom setting to all students regularly enrolled in a given year of the course.
- Internship activities: professional internships and laboratory work designed to enable students to develop and acquire technical, interpersonal and methodological skills in a supervised learning environment, initially under the supervision of a tutor and subsequently as primary operators.
- Seminars: training experience aimed at deepening issues in the clinical and practical topics in the dental hygiene field.
- Electives are activities organised to ensure cultural and disciplinary expansion, optimising the preparation of the individual by responding to the personal inclinations of each student.
The Programme Board organises and schedules the above-mentioned compulsory and elective training activities at the beginning of the academic year or, in any case, at the beginning of each teaching period.
The BSc Dental Hygiene guarantees students a number of hours of self-directed learning over the three years of the course, in line with the National Conference of Health Professions Degree Programmes. These activities are intended as personal study for the preparation of examinations and for the individual use, either autonomously or under the guidance of the course tutors, of the teaching resources made available by the degree programme for self‑directed learning and self‑assessment, in order to achieve the intended learning outcomes.
The BSc in Dental Hygiene also guarantees students, throughout the three‑year programme, an adequate number of hours dedicated to self‑directed learning, in line with the guidelines of the National Conference of Health Professions Degree Programmes.
These hours are aimed at individual study for the preparation of examinations and at the use, independently or on the recommendation of the course tutors, of the teaching materials provided by the degree programme for self‑learning and self‑assessment, in order to achieve the expected learning outcomes.
The teaching aids (texts, simulators, medical mannequins, audiovisual media, computer programmes, etc.) will be placed, as far as possible, in areas managed by University staff.
Special emphasis is placed on practical training and clinical internships, which form an integral and qualifying part of professional education.
