BSc Midwifery (taught in Italian)

The BSc Midwifery aims to train health professionals equipped with the competencies set out in Ministerial Decree of the Ministry of Health dated 14 September 1994, no. 740, as well as in its subsequent amendments, additions and in the professional Code of Ethics. Graduates in Midwifery are responsible for providing preventive, curative, palliative and rehabilitative care in the fields of obstetrics, gynaecology and neonatology. Midwives promote education and safeguard the health of women throughout all stages of life, as well as that of couples, children and the wider community. Their responsibilities include care, therapeutic education, management, training, research and counselling. The BSc programme prepares students to identify the health needs of women and mothers, assist during childbirth and the postnatal period, and provide care for children and families. Midwives are also involved in global, sexual and reproductive health, as well as cancer prevention. These objectives and competencies are attained through a three-year programme awarding 180 ECTS credits, with 60 ECTS credits per academic year and a 75% attendance requirement. The programme includes face-to-face lessons, vocational internships, individual study, workshops, and electives. The programme concludes upon completion of 180 ECTS credits, a qualifying practical examination for the Midwifery profession, and the final degree examination.

Teaching mode and activities

Formal education

This form of teaching includes: – lectures: a discussion of a specific topic identified by a title. Lectures are delivered by a tutor and may make use of IT and/or multimedia support. They are based on a predefined schedule and are given to students who are regularly enrolled in a specific year of the course. Students are divided into small groups. – seminars: teaching activities that have the same main characteristics as lectures. Seminars are, however, held by several lecturers with different areas of expertise. These seminars are recorded in each lecturer’s register of lectures.

Non-formal education

This interactive teaching activity is aimed at small groups of students and is coordinated by a tutor whose role is to help students acquire knowledge, skills, and behavioural models. Learning takes place mainly through problem analysis and mobilising the necessary methodological skills to solve problems and make decisions, as well as through direct, personal actions (gestural and relational) in practical exercises and/or attendance at clinical departments, clinics, local facilities, and research laboratories.

  • A) Modules Course modules are held by one or more lecturers, depending on the specific objectives assigned to the course. The specific objectives of each individual course, which are contained in the examination syllabuses, and their scheduling are proposed annually by the course lecturers before the start date of enrolment for the new academic year.
  • B) Vocational activities During the three years of the BSc in Midwifery, students are required to acquire specific professional skills in the field of midwifery by carrying out clinical internships at the facilities identified by the Programme Board, and during the periods defined by the same.
  • C) Elective activities. The Programme Board organises elective teaching activities, which may consist of lectures, seminars, interactive courses in small groups, from which students choose their own options, until a total of 6 ECTS credits have been obtained. Each student independently chooses their elective activities from among those offered.
