EDUCATIONAL METHODOLOGY AND SYLLABUS

MODULE 1
HUMAN ANATOMY
For aesthetic medicine, human anatomy is fundamental, because many treatments (fillers, botulinum toxin, traction threads, lipofilling, laser, radiofrequency, etc.) act on precise structures of the face and body.

Main topics covered:

  • The skin
  • Anatomy of the face, with 4 ECTS credits of dissection on fresh anatomical specimens
  • Anatomy of the body relevant to aesthetic medicine
  • Anatomical areas at risk

MODULE 2
ELEMENTS OF LEGAL MEDICINE. ETHICS AND PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITY

Legal framework of aesthetic medicine, Informed consent, Ethics and professional conduct, Professional liability, Specific aspects of aesthetic medicine, Role of scientific societies

MODULE 3
PSYCHOLOGY
Psychology in aesthetic medicine is a fundamental aspect, often as important as the medical technique itself. It does not concern only the procedures on the body, but also the perception that the person has of themselves and the impact that the aesthetic change has on their life.

The module will cover the following aspects: Patient motivations and expectations, Body image, Psychological well‑being, Role of the aesthetic physician, Ethics in the psychological approach to the patient

MODULE 4
PHARMACOTHERAPY AND PHYTOTHERAPY APPLIED TO AESTHETIC MEDICINE
The use of medicines in aesthetic medicine focuses mainly on outpatient, minimally invasive or supportive treatments, which may involve botulinum toxin, hyaluronic acid‑based fillers or other compounds, chemical peels, systemic drugs such as retinoids, antibiotics and corticosteroids.

Phytotherapy provides important support, especially as a complementary treatment and in maintaining results. The programme will consider plants with antioxidant and anti‑ageing properties, plants with draining action and effects on the microcirculation, plants for cellulite and localised adiposity, and plants for dermocosmetics.

MODULE 5
DERMATOLOGY
Dermatology represents an essential foundational discipline, given that many aesthetic procedures concern the skin and its structures. The module will address common skin imperfections, dermatological conditions of aesthetic relevance, differential diagnosis of the main dermatological diseases, prevention and counselling.

MODULE 6
SCIENCE OF COSMETIC PRODUCTS
The science of cosmetic products applied to aesthetic medicine aims at a multidisciplinary approach that combines chemistry, biology, technology and dermatology. The module will mainly address advanced formulations (biotechnological extracts, nanoparticles, liposomes), application technologies (LED, laser, AI, personalisation), and scientific evidence.

MODULE 7
ENDOCRINOLOGY AND DIETETICS
In aesthetic medicine, endocrinology and dietetics represent two fundamental areas for understanding and managing many of the issues presented by patients, often related to hormonal imbalances, metabolism and nutrition.

For the endocrinology section, the module will consider: Hormonal imbalances and the skin: acne, seborrhoea, alopecia, hirsutism, dyschromia, premature skin ageing; The activity of oestrogens, androgens and progesterone on skin tone, body fat distribution, hair loss; Thyroid dysfunctions affecting skin, hair, rapid weight loss, skin fragility; Menopause and andropause and their aesthetic implications; Polycystic ovary syndrome and aesthetics.

For the dietetics section, the module will consider: weight management, anti‑ageing nutrition, skin and nutrition, conditions resulting from incorrect diet with aesthetic repercussions. The relationships between proper nutrition and support for aesthetic treatments will also be analysed.

MODULE 8
HYGIENE AND BIOINFORMATICS
Hygiene represents a fundamental aspect in the practice of aesthetic medicine, both for patient safety and for that of the practitioner. The main aspects addressed by the module will concern the working environment, equipment, practitioner hygiene and patient hygiene.

Bioinformatics is the application of digital tools, algorithms and biological databases to analyse information useful for clinical practice and research. The module will examine in detail genomics and cosmetogenomics, analysis of the cutaneous microbiome, dermatological databases and aesthetic telemedicine.

MODULE 9
AESTHETIC MEDICINE
The module, divided into 10 different teaching units, five per year, will analyse all aspects of aesthetic medicine, with particular reference to the prevention and treatment of imperfections of the face and body. The aim is to improve physical appearance, psychological well‑being and quality of life through the use of minimally invasive or non‑invasive procedures, generally outpatient and with rapid recovery times.

The units will examine the main areas of aesthetic medicine: the aesthetic medical consultation, facial rejuvenation, body treatments, skin care, hair loss, preventive medicine, and medicine in relation to aesthetic surgery.

MODULE 10
PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL METHODS IN AESTHETIC MEDICINE
In aesthetic medicine, physical and chemical methods are used to treat skin imperfections, improve skin texture, counteract ageing and remodel tissues.

Physical methods are based on the use of energies or instruments that act directly on tissues. The module will analyse laser therapy, intense pulsed light, radiofrequency, focused ultrasound, cryotherapy, microdermabrasion, needling and micro-needling.

Chemical methods are based on the application of substances capable of stimulating skin renewal or reducing fat deposits. The module will analyse chemical peels, mesotherapy, the use of sclerosing agents, oxygen therapy and carboxytherapy.

MODULE 11
ANTI-AGING AND REGENERATIVE MEDICINE
Anti‑ageing and regenerative medicine is an interdisciplinary field that combines prevention, early diagnosis and targeted interventions to counteract ageing and promote tissue regeneration.

The module will analyse the objectives of anti‑ageing medicine, which aims to slow down biological processes, including clinical and laboratory assessment, lifestyle, targeted supplementation and balanced hormone therapies when necessary.

The regenerative medicine section will examine the main approaches to stimulate the repair and regeneration of damaged tissues, including stem cells (mesenchymal, adipose, bone marrow), growth factors (PRP – Platelet‑Rich Plasma, platelet derivatives), gene therapies and biomaterials.

MODULE 12
MARKETING AND COMMUNICATION
Marketing and communication in aesthetic medicine represent a highly sensitive area, combining strategies typical of the commercial sector with the ethical and regulatory requirements specific to healthcare.

The module will cover the following aspects: regulatory and ethical framework, marketing strategies, communication channels, persuasive communication tools and current trends.

Each module of the CPD course concludes with an assessment test. At the end of each of the two years of study, a final written and oral examination will take place, the outcome of which contributes to determining the grade for admission to the discussion of the CPD course dissertation.

The CPD course dissertation will focus on a topic agreed upon with the lecturer of the chosen subject.

In terms of teaching methodology, the CPD course will provide training according to the following modalities:

• Classroom: standard lectures will be held in classrooms according to the CPD course programme.  During the lectures, professors/tutors may interact with participants to illustrate more effectively the concepts and basic techniques of the programme.

• Practical sessions: real‑time practical activities will be proposed, guided by professors/tutors, to complete the course activities from a practical perspective. Thanks to these practical exercises, participants will complete their training and will be able to learn the main approaches to the practice of aesthetic medicine.

• Seminars:  participants enrolled in the CPD course will complement theoretical learning with video lectures, seminars and tutorials. These activities may be carried out in two modalities:

• Synchronously, through videoconference and audioconference;

• Asynchronously, through tools such as e‑mail and Internet discussion forums. The discussion forums, related to the topics of a specific subject, allow dialogue to be expanded and collaborative learning to be stimulated, offering the opportunity to reflect independently on the issue discussed and on the activities carried out during study.

• Teaching materials: representing the content of the course, including digitised video lectures with bookmarks enabling hypertext and multimedia links to books, selected bibliographic references, exercise texts and selected web resources.  The system of dynamic bookmarks gives Internet‑based video lectures a hypertextual character that allows different levels of navigation: from one lecture to another, between topics within a single lecture, and among materials referring to the same subject.
