Anne Wilhelmina Saskia Rutjes

Prof. Anne Wilhelmina Saskia Rutjes is an esteemed researcher and academic specialized in evidence synthesis, diagnostic test evaluation and research methodology. As of 2025, she holds the position of Associate Professor in Medical Statistics at the Saint Camillus International University of Health and Medical Sciences (UniCamillus) in Rome, Italy.

Prof. Rutjes has achieved the Abilitazione Scientifica Nazionale (ASN) in Italy, qualifying her for the role of associate professor (Professore di Seconda Fascia) in 06/MEDS-24/A Medical Statistics (valid from 2017) and in the same round, she achieved the ASN qualification for the role of full professor in the field of Sciences of Health Professions and Applied Medical Technologies (Scienze delle Professioni Sanitarie e delle Tecnologie Mediche Applicate), underscoring her interdisciplinary expertise. Notably she was the first physiotherapist in Italy to obtain the Italian qualification (ASN) at the Associate Professor level in the field of ex SSD MED/48 currently 06/MEDS-26/C   Health Professions of Rehabilitation Science (Scienze delle professioni sanitarie della riabilitazione), a significant milestone in the academic recognition of physiotherapy professionals in the country. 

In 2005, Prof. Rutjes obtained her PhD at the department of Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Amsterdam, Netherlands. In 1999, she graduated in Health Sciences with a specialisation in movement sciences, at the Maastricht University in the Netherlands, where she also completed the track of medical statistics. In 1994, she graduated as physiotherapist at the Hogeschool of Amsterdam in the Netherlands. She has worked as physiotherapist in Germany, and she has held academic and research positions at several esteemed universities and research centres, including:

  • University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Italy: Postdoctoral Researcher (RTDA)
  • University of Bern, Switzerland: Senior Researcher (Assistant-1) at the Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine and CTU (clinical trials unit). 
  • Consorzio Mario Negi Sud: postdoctoral researcher (cocopro)
  • University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands: doctoral and postdoctoral researcher

In her period at the University of Bern, she also founded Rutjes Scientific Consultancy, to act as consultant for international Universities and European Health Technology Assessment agencies and the Federal office of Public Health in Bern. 

Her research portfolio is extensive, with 117 publications indexed in the Web of Science Core Collection, mounting to a H-index of 57 (state of 11 June 2025), which places her in the top 3% of researchers worldwide. Prof. Rutjes is also a member of the editorial board for Archives of Physiotherapy, where she serves as the Section Editor for Research Methodology and Clinimetrics.
