Giovanni Battista Grassi

During his career prof. Grassi has performed more than 25.000 procedures, mainly in the field of surgical oncology.

He has introduced several innovative technologiesin his department, such as intraoperative radiotherapy, laparoscopy and sentinel node biopsy and has developed therapeutic pathways for diseases of the breast, thyroid, liver pancreas and colon.

He contributed in the realization of a week surgery in his hospital and has stressed the collaboration with other departments realizing a multidisciplinary approach to the treated diseases. He was editor and director of Surgical Gastroenterology, the official journal of the Italian section of the CICD. He is in the editorial board of several Italian and international medical journals. He has been president of the Italian section of the International Society for Digestive Surgery and adviser for the Italian Society of Surgery in the years 2008-2010. He acted as president for the 112th Congress of the Italian Society of Surgery in 2010 and was appointed professor at the Roman Medical Academy. He has carried out intense teaching at the Hospital Medical School of Rome between 1977 and 1989 and at the Nursing School in Rome. He researched extensively about the biosynthesis of cholesterol, gastric pathophysiology (where contributed in the development of a test for complete vagotomy), bio markers in patients with cancer of the digestive tract, and neoadjuvant treatments for patients with breast or digestive tract cancer.

He has published more than 230 scientific papers in major national and international journals; he is co-author of the books “Functional Gastric Surgery” and “Surgery of the stomach and duodenum” published by Masson and edited the volumes “Hepatobiliary malignancies” by N. Lygidakis (Italian

Edition), “Ano rectal surgert” by J. Dacosse and P. Todd, “Surgery of the stomach and duodenum” by H. Harkins and L. Nyhus.

He supervised the publication of the Proceedings of the 7th 9th and 10th National Congress of the CICD. He participated in the creation of numerous videos presented in national and international conferences and distributed as teaching materials.
