Luca Sessa

General Surgery - MEDS-06/A

Prof. Luca Sessa is the Head of the Endocrine Surgery Unit at the Fondazione Istituto G. Giglio in Cefalù – Palermo.
The Unit is accredited as a regional reference center by the Italian Society of Endocrine Surgery (SIUEC) and participates in the European registry on endocrine pathology (Eurocrine).

He is an Associate Professor (tenured, second rank) in the scientific-disciplinary field MEDS-06/A – General Surgery at Unicamillus – Saint Camillus International University of Health Sciences.

He holds a PhD in Nutrition, Metabolism, Aging, and Gender-Related Diseases and has earned the international title of Fellow of the European Board of Surgery (FEBS) in Endocrine Surgery after passing the specific qualifying examination.

He was awarded the “Best Podium Presentation” (under 40) at the 116th National Congress of the Italian Society of Surgery (October 12–15, 2014), and received the “BJS Prize 2021” for the best presentation at the European Society of Endocrine Surgeons 2021 Virtual Conference (May 28, 2021).

He serves as a lecturer for the National SIC School of Endocrine Surgery and is the SIUEC regional delegate for Sicily.

He completed his academic training—including his medical degree, specialization in General Surgery, and PhD—at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, A. Gemelli University Hospital IRCCS in Rome. He also attended training programs at the Department of Digestive, Hepatobiliary, Endocrine, and Oncologic Surgery of the University Hospital Center of Nancy (France) and at the School of Surgery (Virtual Hospital – Lorraine), Faculty of Medicine, University of Lorraine (France).

His scientific work includes 94 publications, with an overall h-index of 16 (Scopus; 938 total citations).
He has participated in over 8,000 surgical procedures, performing more than 2,000 as the lead surgeon.
