Medical Sciences Degree acquired at the University of Rome “La Sapienza” in 1986 cum laude.

Residency in Ophthalmology obtained at the University of Rome “Tor Vergata” in 1990 cum laude.

Director of the “Clinical and Research center of neuro-ophthalmology, genetic and rare diseases” of the IRCCS Bietti Foundation, Rome.

National Scientific qualification as full professor for the disciplinary field of 06/F2 Ophthalmology.

He is mainly expert  of pathologies affecting the visual nervous system (neuro-ophthalmology) with particular experience in the field of morpho-functional evaluation of visual pathways (OCT, visual evoked potentials, electroretinography).

He was the first in the international literature to highlight the neurodegenerative processes at the retinal level in Multiple Sclerosis, Alzheimer’s Disease and CADASIL and to document the effect of “neuroenhancement” of ganglion cells and neural conduction along the visual pathways, through treatment with Nicergoline, Citicoline and Nerve Growth Factor in glaucomatous patients, and with Citicoline in patients with Ischemic Optic Neuritis and in patients with diabetic retinopathy.

He has presented more than 350 Communications at National and International Congresses.

Author of more than 300 scientific publications in national and international journals (Total Impact Factor greater than 700, H Factor: 51).

Principal Investigator in several Institutional Research Projects (competitive projects, total funds received about € 4,700,000) and in various Clinical Trials.

“Expert reviewer” and “guest Editorial Board Member” of several scientific journals (i.e.: Ophthalmology, Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science, Clinical Neurophysiology, Brain, Neurology, Current Eye Research,  European Journal of Ophthalmology,  Archives of Ophthalmology , American Journal of Ophthalmology, Vision Research, European Journal of Neurology, British Journal of Ophthalmology, Journal of Clinical Medicine).

Member of scientific societies including the Italian Society of Ophthalmology, the Italian Society of Ophthalmological Sciences, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) and the Italian Society of Clinical Neurophysiology.
