Sport, friendship and fun: these were the main elements of the 1st UniCamillus inter-university tournament. On 6th and 7th May, a two-day football, basketball (men only) and volleyball (women only) tournaments were held at the Sapienza Sport Club in Tor di Quinto, Rome. The players were about a hundred boys and girls from various universities in Rome, invited to take part in this first event organised by SSD UniCamillus Sport, which was set up a few months ago within the International Medical University.
In addition to the UniCamillus representatives and the Sapienza University of Rome teams, the Link Campus University, the Biomedical Campus, the University of Rome Foro Italico and the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore also competed on the various pitches.
Sapienza University of Rome won the football tournament, the University of Rome Foro Italico won the basketball tournament, while the girls of the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore won the volleyball tournament.
UniCamillus also did well, finishing on the podium in all three sports with two second places (football and basketball) and one third (volleyball). More important than the results, however, were the smiles on the participants’ faces and the beauty of sharing happy moments together.
“The success of this event can be seen in the students’ faces as they leave the competition fields, embracing each other as friends and making new connections even with fellow students from other courses and other universities. This is the greatest reward”, said Professor Daniele Masala, Unicamillus Delegate for the Promotion of Sporting Activities. UniCamillus Sport is still in its early stages, but there are already many projects in the pipeline and enthusiasm is high after this first event, which was a great success. “The first step seems to have been successful, the future is certainly bright for us. We hope to organise more events of this kind, opening them up to administrative staff and broadening the disciplines so that sporting activity can be a point of reference for the University. Sport brings people together, strengthens the feeling of belonging, makes us know and feel better about ourselves and others”, concluded Masala, who has already set a date for future editions.
