UniCamillus Auditorium, Via di Sant’Alessandro, 30, Rome

The conference, which will be held in Rome on 6th May 2025 at 2.30pm in the Auditorium of UniCamillus University, will focus on the growing number of chronic diseases and the new challenges that Italy’s health service is faced with as a result of people ageing.

The event, promoted by UniCamillus University, Salute e Società ODV, Tor Vergata University and the Rome Medical Board, aims to address the most pressing challenges about caring for the elderly and frail within a continually evolving healthcare system.

Chronic diseases: numbers and critical issues

In Italy today, more than 14 million people live with a chronic disease, of which more than 8 million are over the age of 65. Half of all citizens aged between 65 and 75 suffer from at least one chronic disease, which is often diagnosed too late. The result is a burden on hospitals and emergency departments, which are increasingly unprepared to deal with complex long-term patients.

A new organisation of assistance

The conference aims to promote a model of health assistance based on an integrated network of community services, strengthening the role of general practitioners, community nurses and the links between health and social care. Community prevention focuses on an approach that aims to make medical care more accessible and effective, with the support of universities, associations and institutions.

An academic and institutional framework

The event will be opened by the Rector of UniCamillus University, Gianni Profita, followed by Alessandro Boccanelli, President of Salute e Società and initiator of the conference. Donatella Padua, UniCamillus Third Mission Delegate, will present the initiative as an essential part of the University’s social impact activities, for a successful dialogue between the academic sector and the needs of the community.

Speakers at the conference

The conference will bring together some of the most important figures in the Italian medical and technological sector to discuss how to tackle one of the greatest challenges facing our healthcare system: the management of chronic diseases in an ageing country.
As part of the institutional greetings, Massimiliano Maselli, Councillor for Social Inclusion and Personal Services of the Regione Lazio, will also take the floor to highlight the strategies and actions being implemented at regional level to strengthen social and medical integration and to care for the most vulnerable.

Keynote speakers include Antonio Magi, President of the Rome Medical Board, who will address the strategic theme of the ‘Case della Salute’, which are essential hubs for the care of chronically ill patients. Alfredo Procaccini, Vice President of Federfarma, will talk about the role of pharmacies in the integrated public-private network, highlighting their potential in prevention and continuity of care. In the area of technological innovation, Marco Trombetti, CEO of Translated and co-founder of Pi Campus, will illustrate the use of artificial intelligence in early diagnosis, while Giuseppe Recchia, co-founder of daVinci Digital Therapeutics, will present new digital therapies and ‘patient-facing’ solutions for more personalised management of chronic diseases.
Other speakers include Rosaria Alvaro, Vice-Chancellor for Social Innovation Policies at Rome’s Tor Vergata University; Laila Perciballi, Guarantor for the Rights of the Elderly at the Municipality of Rome; Roberta Morandini, BSc Nursing Programme Director at Tor Vergata University; Dagmar Rinnenburger, pneumologist and author of the book ‘Cronicità’; Angela Beatrice Scardovi, cardiologist at the Santo Spirito Hospital in Rome; Eleonora Selvi, President of the Fondazione Longe-vitas; and Maurizio Zega, President of the Rome Nursing Board (OPI).

The debate will be moderated by Mariaemilia Bonaccorso, health editor-in-chief of Italy’s leading news agency ANSA and expert in health communication.
An opportunity for a concrete and multidisciplinary discussion between professionals, institutions and innovators to rethink together the prevention and care of chronic diseases, bringing them closer to people’s real needs.
