Analysing the evolution of the nursing profession, exploring the skills currently most in demand within the healthcare system, and guiding students and professionals in choosing education and specialisation pathways are the key objectives of the webinar “Nurses of the Future. Education pathways and career prospects to help you shape your career”, promoted by UniCamillus University on 28 September 2026, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., in collaboration with Randstad Italia, UIL FP Nazionale and Clinica Madonna della Fiducia.
A profession facing staff shortages and digital transformation
The initiative takes place against a backdrop of two major transformations. On the one hand, staff shortages remain a structural challenge: according to the first Report on the Nursing Professions produced by FNOPI together with the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa, Italy is short of at least 65,000 nurses, with 6.5–7.8 professionals per 1,000 inhabitants compared with an OECD average of more than eight. The gap is even more pronounced in community care: Ministerial Decree 77/2022 sets a standard of one family or community nurse per 3,000 inhabitants, corresponding to a national need for 19,657 professionals, compared with 2022 Ministry of Health data showing fewer than 2,000 nurses in service. This gap highlights how much of the reform of community-based healthcare still remains to be implemented.
On the other hand, the profession is undergoing rapid technological transformation: according to the Digital Health Observatory of Politecnico di Milano, over the past year 37% of Italian nurses have used generative artificial intelligence in their work, an increase of 18 percentage points from 19% the previous year.
Education and skills to meet new challenges
The event is aimed at nursing students, final-year students, recent graduates and professionals interested in understanding the transformations taking place in the healthcare sector, new employment opportunities and pathways for developing increasingly specialised skills.

Bringing together universities, the world of work and the profession
The event will open with institutional greetings from Rector Profita, Rita Longobardi, Secretary General of UIL FP Nazionale, and Laura Schieroni, Head of Healthcare at Randstad Italia. The event will be moderated by Fabio D’Agostino, Associate Professor at UniCamillus, President of the Bachelor’s Degree Programme in Nursing and Director of the Master’s Degree in Management for Coordination Roles in the Healthcare Professions and the Master’s Degree in Critical Care Nursing.
“The evolution of healthcare delivery models is expanding nurses’ responsibilities and areas of intervention,” says D’Agostino. “It is therefore essential to invest in advanced and continuing education, enabling students and professionals to develop and update their skills and to address the clinical, organisational and technological transformations taking place in healthcare with the appropriate tools.”
The webinar will feature Andrea Migliorati, Healthcare Specialty Manager at Randstad; Simone Selvaggio, Head of Training at UIL FP Nazionale; and Silvia Falbo, Nursing Coordinator at Clinica Madonna della Fiducia. The dialogue between university education, the labour market, professional representation and clinical practice will explore potential career opportunities, emerging skills and the role of postgraduate specialisation in the development of nursing careers.
The event will conclude with Giuseppe Bruno, Head of Master’s Degree Development at UniCamillus.
