Pooling expertise, experience and ideas to transform mutual knowledge into new research opportunities. This was the aim of the Shared Research Day – ‘Getting to know each other to collaborate’, the initiative that UniCamillus launched to mark the start of Research Week 2026, scheduled from 21st to 27th September.
The event took place on Monday 21st September, from 10.00 am to 2.00 pm, in Lecture Theatre 1 of UniHall, where 120 researchers from the University were invited to meet, present their work and engage in round-table discussions on the different areas of research being carried out at UniCamillus.
The day began with official opening remarks by the Rector, Gianni Profita, and the Research Delegate, Emiliano Maiani, followed by discussions amongst the academics through the presentation of papers and research findings produced at the University.
Not just a presentation event, but above all an opportunity for scientific networking within the university, designed to foster connections between groups and individual professionals, including those from different academic disciplines. The aim was to highlight skills and expertise that could match projects already in the planning stage or new research ideas, creating opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration and new joint projects.
“Research is one of the key pillars upon which UniCamillus is building its future”, says Rector Gianni Profita. “Investing in research means investing in people, in ideas and in the ability to tackle health challenges with new tools and a long-term perspective. This vision is precisely what inspired the Shared Research Day: creating opportunities for our researchers to get to know each other, pool their skills and experiences, and find new approaches together. Because the future of research also depends on the ability to network, to bring together different fields of knowledge, and to transform an individual insight into a shared project. UniCamillus aims to continue being a place where this future can take shape”.
“UniCamillus is developing an increasingly recognisable research profile, more specifically in neuroscience, precision oncology and reproductive medicine—fields in which basic and clinical research interact in a meaningful way. The first Shared Research Day marks an important step on this journey and offers an opportunity to further highlight the expertise within our academic community and to strengthen the link between the laboratory and patient care”, says Research Director Emiliano Maiani.
UniCamillus research: results, innovation and the future
UniCamillus is currently involved in around 16 active research projects, ranging from neurodegenerative diseases to oncology—with a particular focus on the impact of cancer on quality of life—and from cardiovascular diseases to gender-specific medicine. In the University’s laboratories and clinical settings, researchers are working to gain an ever deeper understanding of the mechanisms underlying diseases, identify new biomarkers, improve diagnostic tools and contribute to the development of innovative therapeutic approaches. This commitment addresses the major challenges of contemporary medicine and aims to transform research findings into knowledge, innovation and tangible treatment opportunities for patients.
The University’s research activity was assessed as part of the 2020–2024 Research Quality Evaluation, the main national exercise organised by the Italian National Agency for the Evaluation of University and Research Systems (ANVUR) to analyse the quality of scientific output and the impact of the ‘Third Mission’ activities of Italian universities. In the specific field of medical sciences research, UniCamillus achieved a particularly significant result:
- 1st place amongst Italian non-state universities with a similar volume of projects assessed;
- 3rd place amongst all non-state universities;
- 9th place in the overall national ranking, which includes both state and non-state universities.
This achievement attests to the quality of the University’s scientific research in the medical field and confirms the strength of the growth strategy it has undertaken—a strategy that will gain fresh momentum on 21st September, a day designed to translate these results into new collaborations and shared projects.
