In Italy, almost one in two adults is overweight or obese: according to Istat, in 2025, 46.4% of the population aged 18 and over was either overweight (34.8%) or living with obesity (11.6%, corresponding to 5.75 million people).
It is against this backdrop that, on Saturday, 10 October 2026, Room 5 of the Cinema Barberini in Rome will host the conference “Incretins and Metabolic Health: A Therapeutic Revolution for Overweight, Obesity and Related Conditions”, focusing on one of the most widely discussed topics in metabolic medicine today.
The event will open at 9:00 a.m. with an opening address and welcome remarks by Prof. Gianni Profita, Rector of UniCamillus, and Prof. Giuseppe Novelli, Professor of Medical Genetics at the University of Rome Tor Vergata. Among the speakers featured in the programme is also Marco Infante, Associate Professor of Endocrinology at the Bachelor’s Degree in Medicine and Surgery at UniCamillus. At 12:20 p.m., Prof. Infante will discuss weight-loss maintenance and therapeutic safety.
A morning focused on new therapies and treatment perspectives
The congress will bring together specialists from different areas of medicine to review the latest evidence on incretin-based therapies and their use in the management of overweight, obesity and related diseases.
In this context, Marco Infante will deliver a presentation entitled “Incretin Mimetics: Strategies for Maintaining Weight Loss and Therapeutic Safety”. His talk will explore the evolution of incretin-based therapies and address one of the key issues in obesity management today: what happens after weight loss and how its results can be maintained over time while ensuring an appropriate safety profile.
«In recent years, incretin mimetic drugs, including GLP-1 receptor agonists and dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonists, have revolutionised the clinical management of type 2 diabetes mellitus, obesity and metabolic syndrome», explains Prof. Infante. «This presentation will address emerging strategies for maintaining weight loss achieved with incretin mimetic drugs, as well as the therapeutic safety profile of these molecules, with particular attention to the main adverse effects and their management in clinical practice».
The morning programme will feature a series of clinical and in-depth sessions. Following the opening presentation on the incretin revolution and new oral molecules, the first session will explore the relationship between incretin-based therapies and cardiovascular, liver and rheumatological health, with a focus on heart disease, steatohepatitis and rheumatic diseases.
The second part of the morning will broaden the focus to women’s and brain health, exploring the potential role of incretin-based therapies in polycystic ovary syndrome and the menopausal transition, as well as research perspectives in psychiatric disorders, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Attention will also be devoted to the quality of weight loss, body composition and strategies for maintaining the results achieved over time.
The third session, dedicated to real-life clinical practice, will focus on the experience of treatment, with space devoted to personal experiences, questions and overcoming weight-related stigma.
A multidisciplinary exchange
The programme brings together different areas of expertise and perspectives, featuring professors and specialists from several Italian universities.
In addition to the aforementioned Gianni Profita, Marco Infante and Giuseppe Novelli, speakers include Mario Angelico, Andrea Fabbri, Costanzo Moretti and Cinzia Niolu from the University of Rome Tor Vergata; Massimiliano Caprio and Giuseppe Massimo C. Rosano from San Raffaele Roma University; Antonio Aversa from the University Magna Graecia of Catanzaro; Enrico Bendoni, journalist; Lucio Gnessi from Sapienza University of Rome; Alessandra Graziottin from the University of Verona; Luca Miele from the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Rome; and Carlo Perricone from the University of Perugia.
The morning will conclude with a session dedicated to treatment experiences and overcoming weight-related stigma, with an opportunity for participants to ask questions and share their personal experiences.
