UniCamillus University strengthens its presence in medical education with the launch of five new Specialisation Schools for graduates in Medicine and Surgery, which join the one already started in 2023, bringing the total to six.
In addition to the existing Specialisation School in Orthopaedics and Traumatology, the following have been added for the current academic year: Cardiac Surgery, General Surgery, Urology, Midwifery and Gynaecology, and Ophthalmology.
Affiliated facilities and locations
The programmes, accredited by the Ministry of University and Research for the academic year 2024–2025, will be delivered in affiliated hospitals and clinics located in Rome and other Italian cities.
The available specialisation programmes are structured as follows:
- Orthopaedics and Traumatology at the San Pietro Fatebenefratelli Hospital in Rome, directed by Professor Matteo Guzzini (6 places available)
- Cardiac Surgery at the European Hospital in Rome, directed by Professor Ruggero De Paulis and Professor Luca Paolo Weltert (2 places available)
- General Surgery at the private health care facility in Abano Terme (Padua), directed by Professor Anna Caterina Milanetto (6 places available)
- Midwifery and Gynaecology at the private health care facility in Abano Terme (Padua), directed by Professor Barbara Costantini (4 places available)
- Urology at the private health care facility in Abano Terme (Padua), directed by Professor Luigi Schips (2 places available)
- Ophthalmology at the Fondazione Bietti in Rome, directed by Professor Mariacristina Parravano (2 places available)
The programmes have a duration of five years, except for Ophthalmology, which lasts four. Under the guidance of renowned Directors in each field, the training guarantees extensive clinical experience in leading healthcare facilities.
The Directors: internationally renowned professionals
The Directors of the Specialisation Schools selected for the academic year 2024–2025 represent excellence in their respective fields. Professor Matteo Guzzini, Director of the School of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, is a recognised expert in Hand Surgery, Reconstructive Microsurgery and Sports Traumatology. Professor Ruggero De Paulis, Director of the Department of Cardiac Surgery at European Hospital in Rome, has an international career with experience in the United States and France, and is a leading figure in Cardiac Surgery. Professor Luca Paolo Weltert, also at European Hospital, is known for his contribution to the European guidelines on patient blood management and for his expertise in minimally invasive Cardiac Surgery. Professor Anna Caterina Milanetto, Director of the School of General Surgery, specialises in Pancreatic and Endocrine Surgery, with international experience in Germany and Sweden. Professor Barbara Costantini, Director of the School of Midwifery and Gynaecology, is an expert in Oncological Gynaecology and heads the Department of Women’s, Children’s and Public Health Sciences at Policlinico Gemelli in Rome. Professor Luigi Schips, Director of the School of Urology, is renowned for his experience in Laparoscopic Surgery and for having performed thousands of procedures in Urology and Andrology. Finally, Professor Mariacristina Parravano, Director of the School of Ophthalmology, specialises in Medical Retina and Uveitis, and has received numerous scientific awards
Training, research and clinical practice
The expansion of training programmes represents a strategic step towards offering young medical practitioners the opportunity to acquire advanced skills by combining clinical practice, research and theoretical education. In doing so, UniCamillus University aims to train highly qualified specialists ready to operate in leading healthcare contexts, both in Italy and internationally.
With these new activations, UniCamillus consolidates its position within the national context of specialist medical training, strengthening the connection between the university and affiliated hospitals, and offering young professionals high-level programmes in both clinical and scientific fields.

Admission procedures
To access the Specialisation Schools, candidates must hold an MSc in Medicine and Surgery and, if not yet obtained, must complete their professional qualification before the start of the academic activities. Admission is granted through the national selection process organised by the Ministry of University and Research (MUR).
Candidates will be able to indicate their preferences for the Specialisation Schools from 23rd to 29th September 2025, ranking them by priority. Allocation of available places will be based on the preferences expressed.
The ranking lists with the assignments will be published on 30th September 2025. Assigned candidates must complete their enrolment at the designated school by 6th October 2025 at 12pm (noon). Final enrolment results will be available on 9th October 2025 in each candidate’s personal area on the portal www.universitaly.it.
Academic activities will begin on Friday, 1st November 2025.
