Innovation and Tradition in Medical Education conference: Professor Barbara Tavazzi’s talk

The President of the MSc in Medicine and Surgery at UniCamillus University speaks at Italy’s Senate on community medicine

On 2nd October, in the prestigious room of the Istituto di S. Maria in Aquiro, at the Senate of the Italian Republic, a conference entitled ‘Innovation and Tradition in Medical Education‘ was held, organised by Senator Antonio De Poli and coordinated by Senator Paola Binetti, with an introduction by Professor Andrea Lenzi.

The event, which was attended by representatives from all of Rome’s universities, provided an important opportunity to discuss the future of medical education, which is perhaps still too rooted in outdated paradigms.

Professor Barbara Tavazzi, President of the MSc in Medicine and Surgery at UniCamillus, represented our University at the event. Her talk focused on community medicine, a practice that needs to get closer to patients, supporting them in both treatment and prevention, and communicating effectively with them.

Learning to communicate with patients starts with training, and this is why at UniCamillus University we offer free language courses in both English and Italian to help our students become skilled professionals who can communicate with everyone. And all this thanks to our wonderful UniCamillus Language Centre (UCLC).

But if language is important to communicate in any context, how do we deal with other contemporary needs? How do we balance tradition and innovation in medical education? What strategies should be adopted to address the shortage of general practitioners? And how can we prepare young doctors for a changing healthcare scenario?

These and other key considerations can be found in Professor Tavazzi’s full presentation in the video below.
