Biography

Senior biostatistician with broad interests in the delivery of information to support health systems improvement. 

A dual citizen of Italy and Australia, he holds a degree in Statistical and Economical Sciences at the University of Bologna, Italy, followed by a PhD in Medicine at the University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Over three decades of international experience, he has grown a versatile expertise at the interface of biostatistics, health services research and medical informatics. In addition to over 50 papers and 90 abstracts in the scientific literature, he has delivered many technical reports and various types of products (including statistical software) for governments and international organizations.

Specific areas of expertise include: federated analytics, multivariate statistical methods (particularly regression trees) and meta-analysis; Health services research; Outcomes research in relation to specific disease conditions including diabetes and cardiovascular diseases; Health systems performance assessment using quality and outcomes indicators, multilevel modelling, and strategies of chronic care management based on risk stratification.

Biography:

  • 1990: Graduated in Statistics and Economical Sciences at the University of Bologna in Italy.
  • 1992-2000: Head, Unit of Statistics and Information Systems at Consorzio Mario Negri Sud, involved in national/international projects in health services research and meta-analysis; Consultant  at the Harvard Centre for Biostatistics in AIDS Research for the application of regression tree methods.
  • 1999: co-founder of the consulting company Serectrix snc, Pescara.
  • 2000: A/Prof Biostatistics, Director of the Centre for Health Systems Research, Monash Institute of Health Services Research, where I established a new program in population-based information systems.
  • 2004: senior officer at the Italian Ministry of Health, Department of Health Policy and Planning.
  • 2005-12: Technical Coordinator of the European Network of Diabetes Registers EUBIROD (co-funded by the EU in the BIRO, EUBIROD and BRIDGE HEALTH projects).
  • 2015-17: Full Professor (permanent role) at the University of Surrey, UK.
  • 2017-24: Adjunct Professor, Department of Statistical Sciences, University of Bologna; Visiting Professor, University of Surrey; Research associate, University of Oxford (co-leader WP1 EU project Healthpros); Scientific Director of the National Covid-19 Portal; Member of the Bureau, OECD Health Care Quality Indicators Project; Executive Analyst, Italian National Agency for Regional Health Services (AGENAS), Rome, Italy; Coordinator, Collaborative Health Information European Framework (CHIEF), EU Joint Research Centre, Ispra (VA), Italy.
