Biography

Degree in Medicine and Surgery (110/110 cum laude) from the “La Sapienza” University of Rome in 1997. Specializzation diploma in Ophthalmology at the University of Rome “La Sapienza” in 2001 (score 70/70 with honors). 

Researcher at the IRCCS-Bietti Foundation from 2002 to today. 

Consultant in Ophthalmology at San Pietro Fatebenefratelli Hospital in Rome from 2005 to 2008 (by agreement with Bietti Foundation)

Consultant in the Ophthalmology Department of the IRCCS-Bietti Foundation within the San Giovanni Addolorata Hospital from 2008 to 2017 

Head of the Anterior Segment Unit of the IRCCS-Bietti Foundation from 2017 to today.

Currently Contract Professor responsible for the Integrated Disciplines Specialist Course – Degree in Physiotherapy – UniCamillus International University of Health and Medical Sciences – Rome 2024.

Member of the Scientific Committee of the IRCCS Fondazione Bietti since 2017.

Member of the Scientific Committee of the OneSight Foundation since 2023.

Member of the Italian Board of the SICCSO Foundation since 2023 (The International Society of Cornea Stem Cell and Ocular Surface).

He is the author of more than 100 scientific publications in international journals.

Invited speaker at numerous national and international conferences and courses and member of prestigious scientific societies (ARVO, AIMO, Sitrac, Siccso, Siso, Escrs)

Principal investigator and co-investigator in numerous national, European and international research projects.

The main research activity is focused on the diagnosis and therapy of the main corneal diseases such as Keratoconus and Fuchs’ dystrophy, on lamellar corneal transplants and on the pathophysiology of the crystalline lens as well as on ocular biometric studies. 

He has performed approximately 5000 surgeries including 4000 cataracts and approximately 500 corneal transplants. 

Humanitarian activity: in August 2014 he promoted and participated in a surgical humanitarian mission at the Fathers of the Consulate hospital in Wamba (Kenya).

In August 2006 he participated in the “One Life” mission carrying out surgical and outpatient activities at the KUTA-Lombok-Indonesia mission. In October 2005 and June 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 and in December 2010 and 2011 take part to the humanitarian mission “Ridare la Luce” promoted together by San John of God Hospitals and Italian Air Force, carrying out Ophthalmic surgical activities at the San John of God Hospitals hospitals in Afagnan (TOGO) and Asafo (GHANA) and Jesuits Hospital “Le Bon Samaritain”of Djamena (CIAD).
