Massimiliano Iannuzzi Mungo
Massimiliano Iannuzzi Mungo graduated in Medicine with honors (110/110 cum laude) from the University of La Sapienza in Rome, where he also specialized in General Surgery at the 1st School of Specialization of La Sapienza, directed by Prof. Sergio Stipa, achieving a final grade of 70/70.
In 1987, he obtained the “Certificate of Attendance as postgraduate visitors” at St. Mark’s Hospital in London, and in 1990, he spent six months at the same hospital, specializing in the treatment of colorectal diseases. Later, he deepened his surgical skills at the University of Erlangen in Germany and at the Gustave Roussy Hospital in Paris, specializing in cancer treatment. He continuously collaborated with Prof. S. Stipa’s surgical activities at the Umberto I Polyclinic in Rome. On January 1, 2019, he took on the role of Director of the Department of General Surgery at the “Luigi Di Liegro” Polyclinic in Liegro, Rome.
A member of scientific societies such as the SIC (Italian Society of Surgery) and ACOI (Association of Italian Hospital Surgeons), he has devoted many years to colon and proctology and was one of the founders of the SICCR (Italian Society of Colorectal Surgery) in 2003.
In 2009, Dr. Massimiliano Iannuzzi Mungo founded and was elected president of FISOPA, the Federation of Scientific Societies of Accredited Private Hospitals, a role he held for three years. FISOPA is a federation that brings together seven scientific societies and about 5,000 doctors.
Internationally, he was the promoter of a scientific collaboration project between Italy and Cuba, serving as Vice President and Scientific Director of the Association for the Development of Surgical Sciences Italy-Cuba Onlus. He participated as a member of the international scientific committee in organizing 10 international congresses in Cuba (2010-2018).
In 2008, as President of SICOP, he signed a bilateral international agreement for clinical and surgical exchange with the National Center for Clinical Surgical Research at the CIMEQ Hospital in Havana, Cuba, one of the main hospital and research centers for general surgery in Latin America. Since 2010, he has been performing high-level surgical procedures at the CIMEQ Hospital. In 2010, he was the first Italian to be appointed an honorary member of the Cuban Society of Surgery.
Since 2011, he has been involved in Italy in the surgical treatment of over 400 Libyan patients injured during the 2011 revolution, performing complex surgeries for war injuries. Since 2011, he has also been a consultant to the Libyan Embassy in Italy for general surgery.
Dr. Iannuzzi Mungo’s surgical practice spans various fields of general and oncological surgery, including urological and gynecological surgeries for both oncological and functional diseases. Since 1993, he has focused on laparoscopic surgery.
He has performed over 10,000 surgeries as the primary operator. Among the numerous clinical cases he has treated, some are of particular clinical interest due to their rarity and size (for example, a case of an 8 kg breast neoplasm that underwent surgical intervention), for which Dr. Iannuzzi Mungo has been mentioned in newspapers and interviewed on television programs (Il Messaggero, La Repubblica, Corriere della Sera, Rai 2, Daily News, etc.).
