BEFORE ARRIVING IN ITALY

All the steps you need to take before your arrival in Italy.

Yes. Universitaly is the portal of the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MUR). It is the only official, free way for international students to pre-enrol. The Italian embassy or consulate can process your visa only once UniCamillus has validated your pre-enrolment.

It depends on when you apply to UniCamillus. If you apply during the pre-enrolment period, you complete a pre-enrolment on Universitaly, as described below. If you apply to a call published towards the end of the year, this step may already be your enrolment at UniCamillus. Always follow the instructions in your call and in the emails you receive from UniCamillus.

  1. Register on universitaly.it with the same email address you use on GOMP, the UniCamillus student portal. Otherwise we cannot match your application.
  2. Type your details exactly as in your passport: all names and surnames, in the same order.
  3. Confirm your email via the message from [email protected] (check your spam folder).
  4. Choose International students, then Pre-enrol now.
  5. Select UniCamillus – Saint Camillus International University of Health Sciences, Rome, and your course exactly as written in your admission letter. Add the embassy or consulate where you will apply for the visa.
  6. Upload your valid passport and a photo.
  7. Check the overview and submit. You will get an email from [email protected].

Only if you already have an official one. Leave the field blank otherwise: the code generated by GOMP is not official.

Only your valid passport is mandatory. Your academic documents are already on GOMP.

Only your valid passport is mandatory. Your academic documents are already on GOMP.

No. The ministerial Procedures allow one application per academic year, for one university and one course.

A few days. UniCamillus either validates it or asks you for missing information. Places for visa students are limited and universities can validate only a limited number of pre-enrolments, so apply early.

No. The final decision belongs only to the Italian embassy or consulate.

Just log in again. You can stop and log back in later without losing your data.

Foreign qualifications are not recognised automatically. UniCamillus accepts two routes, each with a legalised translation of your diploma into Italian or English:

  • CIMEA certificates (recommended): the Statement of Comparability and the Statement of Verification, issued by CIMEA, the Italian ENIC-NARIC centre. They are fully online and faster. Request them through the UniCamillus–CIMEA agreement page: unicamillus.org/en/services/cimea. If your country signed the Lisbon Recognition Convention, the comparability statement is replaced by the free ARDI Statement of Correspondence on ardi.cimea.it.
  • Declaration of Value (alternative): issued by the Italian embassy or consulate in the country where you obtained the diploma. It requires legalisation first and usually takes longer, so start early.

The start of the academic year, at the Registrars’ Office. Without these documents you can attend classes but cannot take exams, and you will be suspended before the winter exam session.

Legalisation proves a foreign document is genuine. In countries that signed the Hague Convention it is a single stamp, the Apostille; elsewhere the Italian consulate does it. A legalised translation is made or certified by the Italian consulate or by a sworn translator.

It is your Italian tax code. You need it to enrol, apply for the residence permit, register for health care, get a SIM card, open a bank account and rent a flat. The easiest way is to ask the Italian embassy or consulate before you leave. In Italy, non-EU students request it at the Questura for the area where they live, with passport and visa (for Rome: questure.poliziadistato.it/it/Roma). Codes from online calculators or GOMP are not official. EU students request it at the Agenzia delle Entrate instead.

A Type D national visa for study, “university enrolment”. It is required for any stay longer than 90 days, even if your country is visa-free for short trips. You can check your case on vistoperitalia.esteri.it.

No. The ministerial Procedures do not allow it.

At the Italian embassy or consulate in your country of residence, by appointment (Prenot@mi or the official visa centre). Apply by the deadline set each year in the ministerial Procedures, as soon as your pre-enrolment is validated: processing can take up to 90 days. Your consulate or UniCamillus may set an earlier date.

  • Valid passport and passport photos
  • Universitaly summary, validated by UniCamillus
  • Original secondary school diploma, with CIMEA certificates or Declaration of Value
  • University entrance exam certificate, only if your country requires one to enter university
  • Language certificate, at least B2: for English-taught courses, an English certificate covering all four skills; for Italian-taught courses, the university certifies your Italian level in the pre-enrolment
  • Proof of funds, at least the yearly amount set in the ministerial Procedures in force
  • Proof of accommodation in Italy
  • Health insurance valid in Italy
  • Visa fee and any extra document the consulate asks for

The money must come from lawful, traceable sources, preferably your own or your family’s (relatives up to the 4th degree). The consulate may check account history and whether the funds match your family’s income. A scholarship counts only if it has been officially awarded, not just applied for. The minimum amount is updated every year.

No. Applying for a student residence is not proof of accommodation.

A visa valid for 365 days with multiple entries, as set by the Procedures. Fingerprints are taken at the appointment, for Type D visas too.

The denial comes with written reasons. You can appeal to the Regional Administrative Court of Lazio (TAR Lazio) within 60 days. UniCamillus does not refund fees already paid. You can check the status of your application only with the consulate where you submitted it.

  • Passport with visa
  • Diploma, CIMEA certificates or Declaration of Value, and translation
  • Admission letter and Universitaly summary
  • Health insurance certificate
  • Proof of funds and accommodation
  • Codice fiscale certificate
  • Vaccination records (Hepatitis B)
  • 6–8 passport photos

AFTER YOUR ARRIVAL IN ITALY

All the steps you need to take after your arrival in Italy.

Apply for your residence permit within 8 working days of your arrival, and sort out your health cover. The visa only lets you in; the residence permit (permesso di soggiorno per studio) is what makes your stay legal.

  1. Ask for the free residence permit kit (kit per il permesso di soggiorno) at a post office with a Sportello Amico desk. Find the nearest one on it/cerca.
  2. Fill in the form for a study permit and stick the €16 revenue stamp on it.
  3. Add photocopies, not originals: passport (all pages), visa with entry stamp, health insurance or SSN receipt, UniCamillus admission letter or enrolment certificate, proof of funds, proof of accommodation, codice fiscale.
  4. Hand it in at the post office with the envelope open, show your passport and pay. You get a receipt and your Questura appointment date.
  5. Keep the receipt safe and bring a copy to the Registrars’ Office.
  6. Go to the Questura with the originals and passport photos for your fingerprints.
  7. Collect your card when you receive the text message saying it is ready.

Patronati (welfare assistance offices) can help you fill in the kit for free.

€116.46 in total: postal payment slip for the permit card €70.46, post office handling fee €30.00 and revenue stamp (marca da bollo) €16.00. Amounts apply to permits of up to one year and can be updated: check portaleimmigrazione.it. Buy the revenue stamp at a tobacconist (tabaccheria).

It can take a few months. Until then, your post office receipt proves you are legally in Italy. Track your card on questure.poliziadistato.it/stranieri.

Apply at least 60 days before it expires, with the same kit. You need your enrolment certificate and proof of exams passed: at least 1 exam in your first year and at least 2 exams in each following year.

If you formally withdraw from your studies, your study permit is revoked.

Yes. Whoever hosts you or rents you a flat must notify the police within 48 hours of your arrival (comunicazione di ospitalità or cessione di fabbricato). Ask your landlord for a copy: it is useful for your permit and for registering your residence.

Cover valid in Italy for the whole length of your permit. You can choose the National Health Service (SSN) or private insurance.

Voluntary registration costs €700 per calendar year if you have no income other than grants. It covers 1 January to 31 December and cannot be split: arriving in October still costs €700 for that year. You get the same services as Italian citizens (paying the usual co-payment, the ticket), choose a family doctor and receive the Tessera Sanitaria by post. It does not include the European Health Insurance Card. To register, pay the contribution as your local health authority (ASL) instructs, then register at the ASL with passport, permit or receipt, codice fiscale, enrolment certificate and a self-declaration of your address.

It must be valid in Italy for the whole stay and cover urgent hospital care with no limits or exclusions. Insurance issued in Italy needs the insurer’s declaration confirming this. If your country has a health agreement with Italy, a consular declaration can also be accepted. With private insurance you do not get an SSN family doctor: you usually pay and then claim costs back.

Some students cover the first months with private insurance and register with the SSN from January. Compare prices before you decide.

With SSN registration you choose a family doctor (medico di base) at your ASL. Visits are free, and your GP writes prescriptions, sick notes and referrals. Bring your ID, codice fiscale, residence permit or receipt, and the name or regional code of the doctor you want.

Call 116117, the free, multilingual 24/7 line for non-urgent medical help across Lazio. It gives medical advice and puts you in touch with the out-of-hours doctor (continuità assistenziale). In a real emergency, always call 112.

Rome is covered by ASL Roma 1, ASL Roma 2 and ASL Roma 3, assigned by your home address. If unsure, call the city information line 06 0606. Websites: aslroma1.it, aslroma2.it, aslroma3.it.

Yes. The family counselling centres (consultori familiari) are free and open to everyone, with no prescription needed. Find one on salutelazio.it

UniCamillus is at Via di Sant’Alessandro 20, in north-east Rome. Take Metro line B to Rebibbia, then bus 040, 041 or 043. Many students live along Metro line B or in Settecamini and Casal Monastero. Check your door-to-door route on the ATAC website or app before you sign. You can search on Spotahome (with a UniCamillus student discount in the Benefits section of the WebApp), idealista.it and immobiliare.it.

  • Visit it or have a live video tour
  • Get a written contract registered with the Agenzia delle Entrate
  • Pay a deposit of no more than 3 months’ rent
  • Ask for the police declaration of your arrival

Do it in this order:

  1. Register your residence (residenza anagrafica) with Roma Capitale: online, by PEC, by registered mail or at your Municipio. The local police will check that you live there.
  2. Book the electronic ID card (CIE) at your Municipio with your residence permit (cartaidentita.interno.gov.it). For non-EU citizens it is not a travel document.
  3. Activate SPID with a provider on spid.gov.it, identifying yourself with your CIE, or use the CieID app. Some providers charge a yearly fee (for example Poste Italiane).

Many benefits, including the reduced ATAC pass, require residence in Rome. It also makes it easier to get your ID card, SPID and health card at the right address.

Bring your passport and codice fiscale. Providers include TIM, Vodafone, WindTre, Iliad, Kena, ho. Mobile, Fastweb, PosteMobile and Lyca Mobile, all with prepaid offers.

Important: once you have an Italian number, you must add it on GOMP (Personal data > Contacts) and keep it easy to reach. It is the number the University uses to contact you.

You usually need your passport, codice fiscale, residence permit or receipt, and your address in Italy. Many banks offer low-cost accounts for under-30s. Some online banks require an Italian ID card, so compare conditions.

The ISEE measures your family’s economic situation; most student discounts depend on it. If your family lives and earns abroad, you need the ISEE Universitario Parificato (ISEEUP). You do not request it on the INPS website: go in person to a CAF (tax assistance centre) affiliated with Lazio DiSCo, where you must sign it in person. It is free at affiliated CAFs. Find one in the list of CAFs affiliated with Lazio DiSCo. Collect your family’s income and asset documents from your home country months in advance.

The regional agency for the right to study offers grants, student housing and canteen meals based on ISEE and merit. It can cover the SSN fee for international grant winners, as set in each call. The call is published once a year before the academic year starts: visit laziodisco.it.

The pass covers Rome buses, trams and metro for 365 days. With an ISEE up to €10,000 it costs €130, up to €15,000 €140 and up to €20,000 €150; the standard annual pass costs €250. The reduced fares are for students under 26 residing in Rome, or holding a DiSCo grant or room. Buy it at ATAC ticket offices with a Metrebus Card. Fares can change: check atac.roma.it.
